Molecular Structure of Water (H2O)

There are a few ways we can think about the molecular structure of H2O. First off, looking at the chemical formula for H2O we could draw something like this to describe its structure. A better way would be to describe where the valence electrons are around the structure of water. It gives us a lot more information. We see the chemical bonds were electron pairs are shared, and we see the pairs of unbonded electrons. They are an important part of the molecule. But we still don’t know the 3D structure for H2O. For that we’ll use VSEPR theory. Atoms are surrounded by valence electrons. These electrons clouds will push away from each other. Same goes for the unbonded electron pairs. Let’s build the H2O molecule with this information. How to Use VSEPR:    • Molecular Geometry: Rules, Examples, ...   How to Draw Lewis Structures:    • How to Draw Lewis Structures: Five Ea...   Simulation at: https://phet.colorado.edu/sims/html/m... Hydrogen atoms always go on the outside of structures. We’ll then add the H atoms. Notice how they repel and end up on opposite sides. Don’t forget the pairs of unbonded electrons... And you end up with the structure for the water molecule. ------
