New Testament writers inherited the Hebrew Bible — and reshaped it using three interpretive methods that are radically different from how most modern readers approach scripture. This video examines each method through specific textual examples, revealing a tension between ancient and modern biblical interpretation that remains unresolved after two thousand years. Key concepts covered: • Typological prophecy — how Psalm 22, an ancient hymn of righteous suffering (composed roughly 1000–500 BCE), was read as a coded prediction of the crucifixion, and how Gospel writers wove its language into their narratives • Clear-text override — how Jesus in Mark 10 dismisses Deuteronomy 24 (an explicit legal statute permitting divorce) by appealing to Genesis 1 and 2, passages about creation and marriage that never mention divorce • Radical allegory — how Paul in Galatians 4 inverts the Hagar and Sarah narrative, mapping the slave woman onto the Mosaic law and Jerusalem, and the free wife onto the new covenant and spiritual freedom, explicitly labeling his method allegory (allegoroumena) • The interpretive traditions behind these methods, including Jewish midrash and Hellenistic allegory • The contrast between early Christian reading and modern historical criticism, which asks what texts meant to their original audiences in their original contexts • The unresolved tension: Christianity's foundational theology was built using interpretive methods that most modern readers — including many Christians — would not accept as valid ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ SOURCE MATERIALS The source materials for this video are from • 21.
