“Don’t you know it’s always darkest before dawn?” Singer-songwriter Treya Lam’s “Dawn” was written in a time of turmoil and uncertainty on the eve of the 2018 midterm elections. Its message could not be more timely today. As partisan forces attempt to shroud the democratic process in doubt and shove the voice of the people into the shadows, while the COVID-19 pandemic rages on to unprecedented proportions, at a time when the days grow shorter, darker and colder, the message to hold on for something brighter ahead could not be more timely. “Dawn” reminds us of the beauty and power of first light after the darkest night. A rare piece of art shot pre-pandemic, in January 2020, this light-filled music video hearkens to a time on the other side of this contagion, when we can all be together and in harmony again — and to a time on the other side of the current American crisis of morality, equity and truth.
