http://www.museresearch.com/ Receptor 2 is a hardware VST player that can be used as sound module, sampler, guitar effects processor, drum module and effects processor. Processing is not based on DSPs and fixed algorithms, but on freely expandable VST plugins (instruments and effects). This video shows what's under its belt. In fact its a specialized computer including a custom built soundcard and a direct access front panel interface so that the device too can be operated without monitor and mouse. As you can see the build quality is impressivly high as well as the quality of the used components. Cooling is very well thought so that the device also keeps on working in extreme situations on stage (heat, vibrations, etc.). Note that this device is the very affordable standard model with pre-installed NI Komplete 7. The PRO and PRO MAX models come with a more powerful CPU and larger harddisk, as well as high grade ram. Nevertheless there seems to be nothing cheap even in this standard model: Mainboard: MSI, which are famous for high quality boards Harddisk: Seagate SATA-II disk (said to be the best choice for audio workstations) CPU-Cooling: Looks impressive, seems to be custom built; all copper design with a silenx cooler, that leads the heat to an all free area that's "cleaned" by a noctua case fan; seems to be very well thought, great airflow design that keeps all components cool for reliable operation Power Supply: Low design (placed below the harddisk), with the fan in the inside to keep down noise RAM: High quality Kingston dual channel kit Audio Boards: The headphone and guitar input boards are separate to minimize distances for lowest noise operation. The main audioboard (rare) is custom built too and is based on a analog devices (AKM) CODEC that has a D/A SNR ratio of 110 dB and can deliver excellent results when combined with a good clock and quality analog components Furthermore, and that really was a real surprise, all plugged contacts are fixed with some type of transparent silicon material so that they can't get loose when the device is moved around a lot (which of course will be the case when using on tour) The device is not as quiet as you maybe would suppose it to be looking at the used components, but it's designed to be used in extreme situations on stage, and so there must be a lot of airflow for propper cooling that can't be achieved with slow rotating fans (which are used for ultra quiet operation). For studio only use the device probably could be modified using slow rotating resistors before the fans. However Muse Research does not recommend to make any changements (this probably might kill warranty too). All in all: Very impressive piece of equipment, too in the inside! Very well thought and very high build quality.
