Hello dear viewers! Today I may save some lives of chemists by this short video! Have fun browsing! 😉 _ - FULL TEXT - _ Today I am gonna show you a test which somedays saves your life! We will talk about tetrahydrofuran degradation associated with peroxides formation because THF could react with atmospheric oxygen during shelve storage without stabilizers. This is especially true for absolute solvent. In the first vial you can see an absolute tetrahydrofuran stored during 4 years in the fume hood, second one is fresh bought one. So… how to check them for peroxides? Easy! Just add a little bit of 15% solution of potassium iodide. This reaction is similar to reaction between iodides and ozone producing free iodine. Now add a small portion of it into vial number two and nothing has happened. Ok! Now into the first one. Gosh… This stuff as dangerous as Hell… We should obviously dispose of it. You have seen everything. If test shows you a clear solution so that is good THF but if you see an iodine, run away or carefully dilute it with potassium iodide solution and put it into waste container. Degradation process reaction will be presented on your screen. In commercial reagent butylated hydroxytoluene using as stabilizer to prevent THF from oxidation process for sure!
