It’s easy to compare a job paying an annual salary vs a job paying hourly. There are about 2000 work hours in a year (50 weeks x 40 hours a week), so we can multiply hourly rate by 2000 or divide annual salary by 2000 to compare the two. But then there’s overtime. On salary, you’ll likely work unpaid overtime, and some jobs seem to expect this. As an hourly employee, you’ll get paid for those extra hours. Sometimes a workplace will offer an hourly employee a salaried manager position. But is it worth it? Even if the manager position pays more, is it enough to cover the overtime you got as an hourly employee? I liked to teach this 2000-hour comparison in our Consumer Math class so that students had the toold to analyze if a promotion would work in their favor or not. #consumermath #personalfinance #jobsearchtips #scaffoldedmath
