Did you know that your relationship with food can be affected by early experiences of childhood trauma? How we relate to our body, our emotions, others, even our Self, impacts the way we relate to food. Dr. Julie discusses on Good Morning Arizona the topic of how early trauma, especially interpersonal and attachment trauma, impacts our relationship with food. So, what's the difference between adult trauma and complex trauma? "Complex trauma occurs in your early years, your formative years, when you're developing your sense of Self, how you respond to your emotions, how you relate to the world. If you've had complex trauma where you've been chronically exposed to material that's too much for your psyche to manage, then you have to find a way to adapt to emotionally survive. That unconscious adaptive behavior , oftentimes, affects our relationship with our body and ultimately our relationship with food. Complex trauma is multiple and interrelated abuse which can be sexual abuse, physical abuse, emotional abuse, neglect, or domestic violence. Too much for your tender psyche to handle. How many times do we talk about "Eat when you're hungry, stop when you're full.' as an intuitive eating skill? If you have unresolved complex trauma, then you are not readily able to connect with your body including its sensations of hunger and fullness." The first thing to do if you're trying to eat according to hunger signals and you're not able to tell if you're hungry or full, or if you're working on emotional eating (what am I feeling that I am reaching for food?)) and aren't able to readily discern what that feeling is - reflect on whether you may have unresolved trauma that needs to be resolved.
