CINCINNATI (WKRC) - A new list was out Thursday, March 9, of what's hot and what's not in the "clean eating" trend. The Environmental Working Group has released the 2017 "Dirty Dozen" as well as what they call the "Clean Fifteen." They consider these a shoppers guide to pesticides in produce. The the Environmental Working Group comes out with the lists of foods by analyzing tests by the US Department of Agriculture. After looking at samples of more than 40 types of conventional produce they found 70 percent of the samples had at least some residue on them of at least one pesticide. It's possible, they said, that some linger even after washing or peeling. Topping the dirty dozen list included strawberries, spinach, peaches, nectarines, cherries, and apples. The clean fifteen included sweet corn, avocados, pineapples, cabbage, onions , cauliflower, and grapefruit. A few things to put the findings in perspective: while it's possible that some linger, people can at least reduce them with scrubbing and peeling. If people choose to buy certified organic foods it will also reduce pesticides but most are more costly.
