Mexico’s New Golden Triangle: America’s Drug Pipeline A new analysis identifies a “Golden Triangle” of fentanyl across Baja California, Sinaloa, and Sonora, where about 92 percent of Mexico’s fentanyl seizures originate. The route links Pacific ports receiving chemical precursors from Asia to U.S. ports of entry in Arizona and California. According to border seizure data cited in reporting, roughly half of fentanyl seized at the southern border is interdicted at Arizona ports of entry. At the same time, 57 percent of guns recovered in Mexico during a recent period were traced back to U.S. purchases less than a year old, a key indicator of trafficking.
