Readings= wt of aggregates in water with wire bucket (A1)= 1327gms. wt of wire basket in water (A2)= 9gm wt of oven-dried sample is (C)= 1995 gms wt of saturated aggregates in (B)=2050gm Specific gravity= C/B-A Water Absorption = 100 ( B – C ) / C The specific gravity of aggregate in the above case is = 2.72 The specific gravity of aggregates normally used in construction ranges from about 2.5 to 3.0 with an average value of about 2.68. 2. Specific gravity of aggregates is considered as an indication of strength. Material having higher Specific Gravity is generally considered as having higher strength. The coarse aggregate specific gravity test (Figure 1) is used to calculate the specific gravity of a coarse aggregate sample by determining the ratio of the weight of a given volume of aggregate to the weight of an equal volume of water. It is similar in nature to the fine aggregate specific gravity test.
