MORE INFORMATION HERE! A common problem among guitarists who are new to soloing and using the pentatonic scale is finding the key. Of course this becomes easier when you are familiar with the song that is being played but if there is a key change, or the root chord doesn't fall on the low E string than this can be difficult. One way to remedy this uncertainty of key location is to learn and memorize the cycle of notes: E - F - F# - G - G# - A - A# - B - C - C# - D - D# - E E - F - Gb - G - Ab - A - Bb - B - C - Db - D - Eb - E Sharps and flats are the same but have two separate names because if a note is raised its sharp, and if a note is lowered its flat. But either way, its a very simple cycle to remember. Once you know this you can apply it to every string, just starting the cycle on the note name of that string. This knowledge not only helps with key location but a number of other things like chord tones, octaves etc. Soloing Strategies: 1. Listen to the chord progression, occasionally place emphasis on chords by playing the root notes or octaves of those roots. The same can be done by playing the Major 3rd, Minor 3rd or any other chord tone of the root. 2. Get comfortable with improvising and creating catchy/interesting note patterns that work for you. 3. Use all your tools; bends, hammer-ons, pull-offs, slides, double stops, vibrato, muting and volume control to help make your solos more unique and attractive. 4. Pacing and Timing are very important. Be flashy and quick at times, but also be controlled and thoughtful other times. There is a time and place for both styles of playing. Its best to have a solid balance of both. 5. Learn solos by your favorite artists to acquire lick and riff ideas. Experiment with them to make their ideas unique to you. Some common guitarists who frequently use the pentatonic scale: Jimi Hendrix, Stevie Ray Vaughan, B.B. King, Eric Clapton, Albert King, Chuck Berry, Jimmy Page, Angus Young, Joe Perry, Jeff Healey, Joe Bonamassa, Slash, John Mayer, Robert Cray etc. Practicing and keeping up with it on a regular basis is what will make the difference between good and great soloing. Please stay tuned for the 3rd and 4th videos, they will up soon. If there are any questions please put them in a comment or a personal message. Have fun and good luck! :) http://www.coreyheuvel.com http://www.myspace.com/coreyheuvel
