Meet some of the amazing people who live in the small rural Alaskan community of Bethel. Originally a Yup'ik settlement called "Mumtrekhlogamute," meaning “smokehouse people,” the area has been home to Yup'ik people for thousands of years. Now, it serves as a hub for rural Alaska, and is surprisingly one of Alaska's larger communities at 6,270 people as of 2021. Bethel sits on the Kuskokwim River in marshy tundra. Its residents are 68% Alaska Native, and unsurprisingly, many cultural traditions remain intact in this community.
