This wasn't always the case in the early electric guitar days, were we had a wound G string. In order to balance the way a light gauge set feels we have the price of having a slightly dominant low E. As plain steel tends to sound louder by mass then a wound one, the G string tends to stick out. Compound that by string radius and harmonic distortion we can use some help there. We benefit from adjustable pole pieces to compensate for that imbalance, and setting them up right gives us a nice natural and open sound that feels and works great in recordings and of course live.
