Myanmar's Wild Archipelago: Protecting people and marine biodiversity

The Tanintharyi region in southern Myanmar is rich with marine and terrestrial biodiversity. The archipelago comprises over 800 islands, many of them forested, and is home to communities that depend on the marine environment for their livelihoods. The area also serves as an important refuge for vulnerable marine species. A number of activities are threatening both the marine biodiversity and the lives of the local people who depend on the seascape for food and resources. The advent of commercial and illegal fishing and a historical lack of protection in the area is resulting in a decline of already-threatened species, including sharks, turtles and rays, and resources for local fishing communities. FFI is working with local communities and the government to establish Locally Managed Marine Areas (LMMA's), which feature protective measures such as No Take Zones and Gear Restriction Zones, all managed by the local people who live there.
