A moment to remember in clay. For the first time ever the National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts (NCECA) was hosted in Salt Lake City. The event is the largest clay-focused gathering in the world, drawing thousands of artists, educators, and collectors to celebrate ceramic arts. This year, Layton High School Best of State Teacher Kyle Guymon helped to curate an Utah student specific showcase, featuring works from 60 high schools from throughout the state. Layton High School student Jassalyn Chihuahua took home the Best in Show award. Her piece stood out among over 250 entries in the Utah regional exhibit. Ceramics is more than a school subject. It’s a medium of transformation where young artists find their voice in clay. “This isn’t something that just ends after high school, this is a drive and a passion that will continue for the rest of their life,” Guymon said. Art shapes us. Just as we shape it.
