(13 Dec 2013) Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono said on Friday that his nation is "deeply concerned" about potential conflict erupting between Japan and China. In a speech ahead of Japan's Association of South East Nations (ASEAN) summit in Tokyo, Yudhoyono said a good relationship between the two countries is critical to the future of the region. China and Japan are bickering over islands claimed by both in the East China and South China Seas. Yudhoyono told the audience that the prospect of the dispute between China and Japan erupting into open conflict would "have adverse impact on all countries in the region". However, Indonesia welcomes Japan's efforts to nurture closer security cooperation in the region, given China's growing power, Yudhoyono said. He went on to say that ASEAN members are hoping Japan and China will find a way to mend their relationship, ruptured by the territorial dispute. Yudhoyono was joined on stage by Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. The biggest influence at a summit this weekend - marking 40 years of ties between Japan and ASEAN - will likely be the regional power that is not attending - China. Nurturing closer ties with ASEAN has been a top foreign policy priority for Abe, since he took office nearly a year ago. China's increasingly assertive stance in the region has advanced that relationship. Also on Friday, Abe met with Brunei's Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah.
