Political activist and JNU scholar Umar Khalid was arrested under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) in September 2020, for allegedly giving provocative speeches and being part of a conspiracy leading to the 2020 Delhi riots. On December 3, 2022, the Delhi High Court discharged him, along with Khalid Saifi, in FIR 101/2020 related to the violence in the Khajuri Khas area of North-East Delhi. However, he remains in jail for another case—FIR 59/2020—which has invoked the UAPA. During this period, repeated bail denials were further compounded by the abrupt termination of calling facilities by prison authorities, a decision later overturned by the court in January 2023. Even then, what he was granted amounted to just five-minute calls, three times a week. At 'Howdy, Democracy?!'—a June 2023 gathering at New York that spotlighted growing concerns about India, the world’s largest "democracy"—Zohran Kwame Mamdani, New York City’s Democratic mayoral nominee, read aloud from Umar Khalid’s Prison Diary, first published in Outlook's issue 'My Dear Apocalypse'. The diary was also featured in 'For In Your Tongue, I Cannot Fit: Encounters With Prison', edited by Shilpa Gupta and Salil Tripathi, and published by Context. The event took place just ahead of Prime Minister Modi’s 2023 visit to the White House and World Yoga Day, and served as a fundraiser for three organisations working to protect human rights and democracy in India: the Indian American Muslim Council, Hindus for Human Rights, and the Polis Project, Inc. @zohrankmamdani @umar_khalid87 #UmarKhalid #DelhiRiotsCase #UAPA #HumanRights #Democracy #PoliticalPrisoners #UmarKhalid #ZohranMamdani #ZohranKwameMamdani #Mamdani #NewYorkCity #NYU #US #UnitedStates #MayoralPolls
