Dr. Crescenzi shares a results of Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging of Sodium and Lymphatics in Patients with Lipedema: Preliminary Tools for a Differential Diagnosis of Lipedema. A special adapter on an MRI machine shows that women with lipedema have increased sodium content and increased subcutaneous fat. Rachelle Crescenzi, PhD, Vanderbilt University Institute of Imaging Science, is the recipient of a post-doctoral grant from the Fat Disorders Research Society (FDRS), which aims to characterize internal lymphatic structural and functional differences in women with lipedema in distinction from those who are obese. She works as part of a group of researchers and clinicians interested in using quantitative imaging and bed-side biophysical equipment to measure the benefits of physical therapy treatment for patients suffering from breast cancer related lymphedema. She is developing magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) metrics that are sensitive to lymphedema, or swelling due to lymphatic impairment.
