"A superb example of Movietone's on-the-spot coverage was the filming of the tragic Hindenburg disaster on a cloudy, overcast day at Lakehurst, New Jersey, on May 6, 1937. Undoubtedly one of the most dramatic newsreel events of all time, the explosion reduced the dirigible to a smoldering mass of ruins within seconds, and several members of the New York staff were directly under the huge airship when it exploded. The Hindenburg had made numerous Atlantic crossings, and the one of May 6th was expected to be no different from the many previous routine landings. Despite a history of nothing unusual happening, this symbol of Hitler's Nazi Germany was covered at every landing by Movietone cameramen because of Editor-in-Chief Truman Talley's intuitive feeling that someday the Hindenburg would explode. Therefore, despite the protests of the various camera crews, one was always present and Talley's intuition resulted in the timely coverage of one of the most famous events of all time."
