40% GST: Luck will still not desert Kerala Lottery | Onmanorama Explains

Under Indian law, Kerala lottery is equated with gambling and liquor. So it was only natural that lotteries were bracketed alongside 'sin goods' like tobacco, pan masala, gutka and was clamped a GST of 40%. Luckily for Kerala lotteries, no hike in GST can dampen its popularity. It is not sensitive to price. Even when ticket prices were increased, sales had kept ascending. Ditto with revenues. Between 2019-20 and 2023-24 there was 26% growth. Moreover, the proposed hike, from 28% to 40%, does not look as momentous as the one in 2020. Then, the GST on lottery shot up to 28% from 12%, a humongous 133%. The proposed increase is only 43%. Most of all, Kerala Lottery's success is fuelled by the inherent need to do good. It's growth began with the launch of Karunya lottery in 2011 to fund the medical bills of the underprivileged. Ever since, despite increases in ticket prices and even a major GST hike, ticket sales have eternally soared.
