Essential Safety during Mobile Crane Operation

Above video highlights the need for adopting proper safety measures and alertness while handling any load with crane. Two riggers holding tag lines at both ends were helping a portable crane operator to unload steel beams from trailer. One of the riggers paused to talk with the supervisor. Unfortunately, the rigger was standing inside the swing radius created by the movement of the counterweight. The crane swung around and fatally crushed the rigger. Several unsafe factors contributed to this worker’s death such as: • No barricade to prevent workers nearby from crossing into the swing radius of the crane. • No conversation should have taken place between the supervisor and the rigger at the counterweight end of the crane which is not observable to the other rigger and the crane operator.
