http://www.lafn.co.za The Loaves and Fishes Network is a non-profit organisation based in East London (Buffalo City), Eastern Cape, South Africa. The organisation cares for 26 rural and semi-urban crèches in poverty stricken areas by providing training on Early Childcare Development to child carers at the crèches, facilitating infrastructural development to centres that we support as well as providing ongoing feeding to the children at the and several hundred families in severe need. LAFN has done exceptional work over the past few years, giving hope in a bleak environment. We are making application to receive government funding, however the process is a long one and at this stage thus still rely on private funding. Although with any NGO, funding is always needed, the organisation is currently in an extremely serious financial crisis. Funds only exist to pay our 11 members of staff until the end of April 2011 and to pay for operating costs for May 2011. At this stage we have had to cease purchasing food for our centres in order for our organisation to survive and as a result, many children are going hungry. Without our food, many children only eat every two or three days, and meals consisting of only rice and water or water and sugar! The relatively new Board have been working really hard on securing financial stability. We do have support from the local community, local donors and international donors such as Oxfam. However, much of these funds (such as Oxfam) are only accessible later in the year and we are in dire need of funds in the short-term (i.e. NOW). As many of you know it can take months for funding applications to be processed and approved; we are continually making applications and have a number in the pipeline -- our frustration is getting enough immediate funds to keep the organisation a going concern. That statement 'every penny counts' really is true -- so however much you can spare to support the organisation, we really are grateful. See our website for banking details and methods of donating.
