The Agentic AI Foundation (AAIF), announced by the Linux Foundation on December 9, 2025, functions as a neutral, open foundation dedicated to advancing, developing, and growing Agentic AI collaboratively. The AAIF was established to solve the problems resulting from the fragmented landscape of competing agent frameworks, which often led to brittle, inconsistent workflows that were difficult to productionize. The primary purpose of the AAIF is to be a single, vendor-neutral place where shared standards for the ecosystem can evolve. Its job is to maintain the shared infrastructure, protocols, formats, and conventions necessary for thousands of different agents, frameworks, and tools to work together reliably. The foundation follows a governance model similar to those that established Kubernetes, PyTorch, and Linux itself as foundational backbones of modern computing. The AAIF brings together three cornerstone open-source projects under one open governance structure: the Model Context Protocol (MCP), goose, and AGENTS.md. By doing so, the foundation creates a stable environment that companies can confidently build upon without worrying that underlying rules will shift if one lab changes direction. The shared hope is that this open governance structure will prevent fragmentation, reduce vendor lock-in, and accelerate the safe, widespread adoption of autonomous AI systems.
