(10 May 2006) SHOTLIST 1. Ramsey Clark approaches the podium at the National Press Club 2. Cutaway media 3. SOUNDBITE (English) Ramsey Clark, Lawyer of Saddam Hussein: "We had asked for more time in two ways, we had asked for three months because we''ve had no opportunity to prepare the defence, we''ve had no protection, we can''t go to Dujail because we would have to have a battalion of Marines. We also haven''t had essential documents to prepare the defence, which we have asked for time and time again. We don''t even have a transcript of the testimony that has been given and we are very concerned about that because there may never be one which means that this history can easily become a fiction agreed upon because you don''t have a record." 4. Cutaway media 7.SOUNDBITE (English) Ramsey Clark, Lawyer of Saddam Hussein: "These cases referred to the court more than 20 months after the, these 148 cases, and the order entered about four months later for execution, they were then referred to a national council of judges who reviewed them to see if they had the right person, to see if there were any legal disqualifications, to see if the confessions were in order, to see if the confessions were renounced, and it was three years after the event before President Saddam Hussein signed the death warrants." 8. Clark at podium STORYLINE Ramsey Clark, a former US Attorney General now defending Saddam Hussein, said the former Iraqi president''s trial is a sham staged and paid for by the United States to remove Saddam as a symbol of resistance. "We''ve had no protection, we can''t go to Dujail because we would have to have a battalion of Marines. We also haven''t had essential documents to prepare for the defence," Clark said during a news conference on Tuesday in Washington. Clark said it was almost impossible to mount a defence given the fact that a transcript of testimony and crucial documents have not been made available to his legal team. Clark said proper legal procedures were followed according to Iraqi law in presenting the facts and determining guilt of the 148 persons executed for the assassination attempt on Saddam in the town of Dujail. Saddam and seven co-defendants are on trial for the deaths of 148 Shiites, the imprisonment of hundreds more, and for torture and destruction of farmlands in a crackdown launched on the town of Dujail following the 1982 assassination attempt. Clark noted that two levels of Iraqi courts reviewed the evidence before a final verdict was rendered against the Dujail citizens. Clark said he probably would not return to Iraq for the restart of the trial, which he said was scheduled for Monday. He said Saddam is his only client, and he thinks the judges have determined to turn their attention to the seven other defendants. The prosecution completed presenting evidence in the Dujail case late last month.
