Hello fellow roller skaters! If you’ve navigated your way to this video, you’re probably in the process of learning to do one foot pivots (one foot transitions). I was asked by a skater like you on Instagram to make a video of myself doing one foot pivots, but without my roller skates on….meaning, in my socks! The goal is to create a short tutorial demonstrating my foot's position, inside my skate boots. This is a bit easier said than done since surely a stiff boot and plate full of wheels will make subtle changes to how you hold your weight. But my hope is that this video can still give a little direction when it comes to foot placement and position. “Wait. Back up. So, what’s a pivot?!” In this video I’m referring to what NJ/NY style (sometimes called “house style”) rhythm skaters call a one foot pivot. In artistic skating or ice skating terms I believe this would be called a 3 turn- someone correct me if I’m wrong. In artistic skating it would be done with the foot a bit flatter and without any bounce. Regardless of its proper name or what style you skate, this is a one foot turn (transition) from forward to backward or backward to forward. I would consider 1 foot transitions/3 turns/pivots to be an intermediate or even advanced level roller skating technique. I know learning to pivot on one foot can be a daunting, anxiety inducing process for many skaters as it really pushes the limits of balance and edge control! Linked below and at the end of this video is another video I did last year where I slowed down footage of me pivoting (on skates this time!) to demonstrate shoulder position and knee bend. I plan to make a more detailed tutorial on one foot pivots soon where I get into edges as well. Stay tuned for that! I’d love to hear what you thought of this video. I’m particularly curious if anyone can relate to how my left foot caves in, affecting my balance. And if so, what you’ve done to compensate for it. I can make a whole separate video where I JUST talk about my weirdly aligned left leg and how I work around it when on the skate floor! Not featured in this video but for those who are curious, this is my current skate setup: 💎 Riedell 336 Boots 💎 Roll Line Giotto Plates with clear blue cushions and trucks set loose 💎 Vintage Vanguard vanathane rental wheels 💎 Bones Reds bearings 🎥: @casper_sk8s Questions or comments?
