In 1997 Dr. Paul Turek popularized an elegant procedure called testicular or FNA mapping. Testicular mapping is an advanced fertility procedure performed on men diagnosed with azoospermia. Very few specialists around the country perform this procedure. FNA mapping took hold because it provides a more complete evaluation of the testicles compared to a simple biopsy while remaining minimally invasive and affordable. The procedure takes about 30 minutes and can usually be performed with the patient awake or under light sedation. Our andrologists will then thoroughly study the slides and generate a mapping report showing the findings. If you have sperm present in many areas of the testicles, you may qualify for a simple sperm extraction procedure with a high likelihood of success. If you have very few sperm in very few areas of the testicles, this map helps us perform a targeted microTESE procedure to find the sperm. This carries a high likelihood of success as well.
