"Merck toch hoe sterck" is one of the most well known Geuzenliederen of the 80 Years War (referred to in the Netherlands as The Dutch War of Independence), it was written between the years 1622-1625 by the Dutch poet and composer Adriaen Valerius. The setting of the song concerns the relief of the Dutch city of Bergen Op Zoom on the 2nd of October, 1622 after enduring a three month long siege by the Spanish General Ambrogio Spinola and his troops. The melody of this song is based upon an Elizabethan lute tune written by English composers Thomas Campion and John Dowland in 1606, titled "What if a Day or Month". Bergen Op Zoom had remained in Anglo-Dutch control since 1588 and successfully repelled repeated Spanish advances and attacks against the city in the following forty years. The city was able to hold out strong during the siege of 1622 due to supply access from the sea on the western side combined with the military deployment of the Scottish Brigade, a British Army unit that was employed in services to the United Provinces throughout the 17th and 18th centuries. On the 2nd of October, Maurice returned triumphantly as the saviour of the city alongside the German commander Peter Ernst II of Mansfeld who forced the Spanish Commander Ambrogio Spinola and his forces to flee. Please note that the political or religious views of either side of this historic conflict are not condoned.
