Akeley, MN Report - Sustainable Tourism Assessment for Small Communities

RSDP is supporting tourism assessments by the UMN Tourism Center in five Minnesota communities under 1,500 people. Peg Davies from the Akeley Chamber of Commerce presented for Akeley. Davies talked about some of the challenges facing small town organizers, the importance of asking people directly to be involved and of getting the city council on board with the project. The community has identified biking, both on paved paths and on dirt trails, as an asset to highlight, the town's location as a possible canoe destination as part of the Crow Wing Chain of Lakes, and the positive effects of helping local businesses be more welcoming to strangers and better champions of what the area has to offer.
