The X-13 was a curious aircraft that came into being at a time where aircraft design was going through a rapid evolution in the first decade of the true jet era. Even though it never became a full production aircraft, the X-13 is not to be deemed a failure. It never had any serious accidents or crashes, it performed admirably in tests, and it helped pave the way for future VTOL aircraft development in the future. The X-13 was able to take off vertically, transition into conventional horizontal flight, and then transition back to vertical control for a vertical attitude landing.
