Tunnel Snoot! - Unboxing and Product Review of the New ScaleTrains HO Scale SD40T-2 Locomotive SP! This new SD40T-2 Tunnel Motor release from ScaleTrains features the longer 123" nose, nicknamed "snoots". Dan takes a look at this highly detailed model in this unboxing and product review! Tunnel Motors were built to draw cooler air from a lower height to combat overheating in Southern Pacific’s snow sheds on Donner Pass. Rio Grande also bought some of these locomotives. The SD40T-2 was essentially an SD40-2 with a different radiator section. Neither the SP nor the Rio Grande had conventional SD40-2s. Some of these engines were acquired secondhand by other railroads. The longer 123” “snoot” nose was built to accommodate Locotrol equipment for remote helper operations. This system was essentially an early version of distributed pawer unit, or DPU, technology common in today’s diesels. Back then the equipment was bigger so it required a larger space inside the locomotive. SP’s sizable Tunnel Motor fleet was delivered in multiple orders between 1974 and 1980. SP 8321 and 8318 were part of an order for 15 Locotrol master units that entered service in 1978. Both units survived the UP merger in 1996, and were retired in 2001. 8321 went to the New York, Susquehanna & Western. 8318 went to Larry’s Truck & Electric and then PRLX. As always, Dan evaluates the model's packaging, prototype accuracy, paint & detail, and how well it operates and conforms to applicable standards.
