The RAT model (Replacement, Amplification, and Transformation) is a tool to help professors and course designers create a framework for their classes and lessons to integrate technology to enhance teaching and learning. All technology should advance the success of our classes and should allow for inclusive learning. A benefit of the RAT model is that it allows professors to ensure that their integrated technologies have purpose and that they facilitate student mastery of content. The PICRAT matrix builds upon the RAT model by classifying student interactions as passive (such as how you are reading this description right now), interacting, or creating. The PICRAT model can be used as both a content creation tool as well as a self-reflection activity for professors as they work to integrate technology effectively into their courses. This model is valuable to educators as it spans disciplines and course competencies, and it can lead to significant and meaningful pedagogical enhancement in our courses.
