This past weekend me and my friend Hugh visited the douglaston salmon run on the salmon river in Pulaski, New York. The salmon run the river annually in the fall to complete their life cycle by spawning and dying. Since it is still considered early season for these fish its not insane action yet, and there were times it was very slow. I had a really fun weekend, and I hope you enjoy the fishing part of the video and learn a lot from the part where I talk. Stay tuned for another salmon fishing video because I have DSR passes for this weekend aswell...... Here is a rundown of what my tips and tricks are that I talk about in the second part of this video: If you haven’t ever been before, right off the bat, you will realize these fish act really weird. They can be running uprive,r swimming right in front of you, and ignoring every single fly that comes by them for 5 hours, then randomly you might start hooking up with fish ever few casts. I mean that these fish can turn on randomly out of nowhere for reasons that I don't understand. When going for salmon, I use a sage 9 weight rod with an Orvis clearwater IV reel. I use a 10 foot 15lbs tapered leader and use from 1 to 4 feet of 12lb 1x tippet. I was using a majority of egg flies this past weekend, but normally I’ll just use different egg flies and streamers and keep witching until I find a fly that gets taken by a fish. A big tip I can give is do not give up. The best thing for me on the DSR has been finding a good pool and not giving u,p even when you’re not getting action for hours. I also suggest getting on the river as early as possible because the morning seems to be the best time for fish to be active. My friends and I didn’t follow this tip and missed some of the best fishing time on both days, but don't make the same mistake as us. I had the best luck this year using pink eggs and pink egg flies, and pink crystal meth flies. I dont believe any parts of the river are better than others, as the fish theoretically have to pass by all the pools so just fins yourself a nice pool and stick with it. For anyone going up this season nightlines and stay tuned because I have DSR passes for this weekend too, so hopefully I can get another salmon video out this year.
