It is considered the first Christian kingdom to emerge in resistance to al-Andalus, the Muslim-controlled territories of Iberia. Foundation The kingdom was founded by Pelayo (Pelagius), a Visigothic noble who led a Christian rebellion against Muslim forces in the Battle of Covadonga (718 or 722). This victory, although modest in scale, became a symbolic starting point for the Reconquista. Pelayo established his rule in the mountainous region of Asturias, where the rugged terrain provided a natural defense against Muslim incursions. Growth and Consolidation Under Pelayo's successors, the Kingdom of Asturias expanded its territory and influence: Alfonso I (739–757): Known as "The Catholic," he expanded the kingdom by repopulating and fortifying lands between the Douro River and the northern mountains. His campaigns helped secure key areas and established a pattern of resettlement that would define later Reconquista efforts. Alfonso II (791–842): Strengthened the kingdom's institutions, declared Asturias a continuation of the Visigothic kingdom, and promoted its Christian identity. During his reign, the tomb of Saint James the Apostle was discovered in Compostela (modern Santiago de Compostela), which became a major pilgrimage site and a unifying force for Christian resistance. Ramiro I (842–850): Defended Asturias against Viking raids and Muslim forces, maintaining the kingdom's independence and stability. Culture and Religion The Kingdom of Asturias played a key role in preserving and advancing Christian culture during a time of Islamic dominance in Iberia. Its rulers supported the construction of pre-Romanesque churches, many of which remain important historical landmarks. The Asturian monarchy also emphasized its ties to the Visigothic legacy, positioning itself as the legitimate successor to the Christian rulers of Hispania. Decline and Transition In the 10th century, the Kingdom of Asturias transitioned into the Kingdom of León, with Alfonso III (866–910) playing a pivotal role in reorganizing and expanding the kingdom. The capital moved from Oviedo to León, and the new kingdom became the leading Christian power in the ongoing Reconquista.
