A low, rustling hum began the second time I sang the chorus lyrics: "Seeing is believing..." as I performed this song for the very first time. Being a novice performer, the emotional, sensory, and data-based stimulation was so extreme, it was sometimes difficult to interpret what was going on in the space between me and the audience. As I was swinging through the chorus, with my favorite chord progressions sailing along under my voice, it began to dawn on me that the sound I was hearing was the audience singing. SINGING! They had only heard the chorus - the lyrics and melody - once before (about two minutes earlier!) and they were singing. In this moment, I heard my father's voice, whispering in my ear... My father was a newspaper publisher and journalist in a very small California coastal town. He was entranced by musicals - Rodgers & Hammerstein, Cole Porter, Lerner & Loewe - and drove with my mother to Los Angeles every time a "road show" came to town. He even wrote a musical himself for a local Red Cross fund-raiser. When I started writing music in high school, his advice came as an aspiration: "What we hope for are melodies that an audience will leave the theater humming." www.margieadam.com
