Tube Overdrive Test // Fryette Power Station Self-Attenuation Not exactly a gear demo, more an experiment. Guitar-tone nerdery ahead! The sound of tube poweramp overdrive/compression is almost mythical; I never get to play with this sound because it's so loud, but those who play on enormous stages can.... and it obviously sounds great! Or does it? The Fryette PS2 in a genius tool for recording and live playing when you have a tube volume issue you need to solve. You can make a tube amp quieter, louder or silent. You can run your preamp straight in and use it as a tube poweramp (as I am doing here). It's 2x6L6, so 'American' sounding, like a Fender or Mesa amp. Turns out, you can make it self-attenuate to get full-on power tube distortion silently to tape. That's a big deal! Fryette do explain the process of self-attenuation in this video: • Fryette Power Station "Self Attenuation" F... ....but you don't get to hear what it sounds like. I thought it would be interesting to make a demo of exactly that feature/process GEAR // used in this video My Bitsa-Strat as modified by K'Mo Guitars, with Tom Anderson pickups Effectrode Blackbird Preamp (for the funk clean part) Kingsley Juggler Preamp (for the blues and lead parts) Victory Countess Preamp (for the metal part) Fryette Power Station PS-2 Celestion IR What's your opinion on the sound? I came to the conclusion that some drive is really good, but too much becomes fuzzy and indistinct. Interestingly, I thought the cleaner, bluesier parts sounded better with lots of poweramp drive, and the metal riff sounded better with less drive and more headroom.... which is consistent with how blues and metal players run their amps, right? WARNING: Do try this at home, but be very careful whenever you're plugging tube amps into anything.... if you do it wrong, stuff can break, get hot, be dangerous. Etc. This WILL wear out your tubes faster than normal. The PS2 got ridiculously hot when playing on full volume! #tubeamps #guitar
