When you extract a tooth it’s important to use a method that preserves as much of the bone as possible. The few millimeters of bone that are lost using elevators and forceps make a big difference in the tissue architecture. While elevators and forceps are still used for the extraction, you can preserve more of the labial bone, by using a periotome, sometimes not even needing to resort to bone grafting. Going around the tooth with the periotome, you can separate the tooth from the PDL ligaments. This allows you to slowly extract the tooth while still preserving the bone and soft tissue. If you want to add autogenous or xenograft bone after that you can still get the results you want.
