In World War II, the Germans had some of the best weapons ever made. But there was one American machine gun they had absolutely no answer for, and it's still in service today almost identical to the design from over a hundred years ago. This video covers the full history of the M2 Browning, starting with the problem it was designed to solve when armored plating started appearing on aircraft and vehicles that rifle caliber rounds couldn't touch. You'll learn how John Browning scaled up his M1917 and took inspiration from a captured German 13.2mm anti-tank rifle round to create the .50 BMG cartridge. The video gets into why the program looked like an expensive dead end for years, how Browning passed away in 1926 with the weapon still unresolved, and what engineering fixes finally made it work. The second half covers combat use from Pearl Harbor through Vietnam, where Carlos Hathcock put a scope on an M2 and set a record shot at 2,500 yards that stood for 35 years. You'll hear about the quad mount, why German machine guns couldn't compete despite their ingenious Lafette tripod, and the headspace and timing problem that plagued gunners for 80 years until the M2A1 finally fixed it in 2010. Serial number 324 was taken out of service in 2015 after 94 years of active use. RogerRoger covers military history with thoroughly researched original content.
