In this recording, Dr Osman Shabir presents a summary of his research focusing on the relationship between vascular and mixed dementia. He begins by explaining how neurons signal to blood vessels to maintain a steady supply of oxygen and nutrients, and how the breakdown of this process is linked to various neurodegenerative disorders, including Parkinson's, ALS, and dementia. The presentation includes an overview of dementia, with a focus on Alzheimer's disease and vascular dementia. Osman describes the pathology of Alzheimer's, characterised by amyloid plaques and tau tangles, and discusses the role of lifestyle factors such as hypertension and diabetes in the development of sporadic cases. He emphasises the connection between Alzheimer's and vascular dementia, particularly through the common risk factor of atherosclerosis. Osman also reviews recent findings on multimorbidity models in dementia, highlighting the need for more research in this area. He explains atherosclerosis and its impact on blood flow to critical organs, leading to conditions like stroke and myocardial infarction. -- Dr Osman Shabir is a BHF Research Fellow at University of Sheffield he studies neuroinflammation, neurovascular function (neurophysiology) in neurodegenerative and cerebrovascular diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease/vascular dementia & cardiovascular disease (atherosclerosis). He uses preclinical models of human disease to study neurophysiology, neuropathology & neuroinflammation in these models to gain a better understanding of disease mechanisms and processes. -- This talk was recorded at the Northern Alzheimer’s Research UK Network Meeting at Newcastle University on the 8th July 2024.
