The 1914 Hoot Lake Hydro Plant That Outlived 5 Newer Coal Plants

This video documents the history of the Hoot Lake power plant in Fergus Falls, Minnesota — from its early hydroelectric beginnings in 1914 to three generations of coal-fired power plants that were eventually retired and demolished. In 1959 and 1964, larger pulverized coal units were added to the site, marking a major expansion in generating capacity. After decades of operation, the coal units were shut down in 2021 and later demolished. Today, the original hydroelectric station continues to generate power — more than a century after it first went online. Special thanks to Otter Tail Power Company for providing historical photographs of the coal-fired power plant used in this video. Not every historic industrial facility can be preserved, but documenting them matters.
