A unified combatant command, also referred to as a combatant command, is a joint military command of the United States Department of Defense that is composed of units from two or more service branches of the United States Armed Forces, and conducts broad and continuing missions. There are eleven unified combatant commands of the United States Armed Forces. The First one is The United States Indo-Pacific Command is the unified combatant command of the United States Armed Forces responsible for the Indo-Pacific region. It is the oldest and largest of the unified combatant commands. It was established in 1947. The second one is The United States European Command is one of the eleven unified combatant commands of the United States military, headquartered in Stuttgart, Germany. Its area of focus covers 21,000,000 square miles and 51 countries and territories, including Europe, Russia, and Greenland. It was established in 1952. The third is The United States Central Command is one of the eleven unified combatant commands of the U.S. Department of Defense. It was established in 1983, taking over the previous responsibilities of the Rapid Deployment Joint Task Force. Its Area of Responsibility includes the Middle East, Central Asia and parts of South Asia. 4th is The United States Southern Command, located in Doral, Florida in Greater Miami, is one of the eleven unified combatant commands in the United States Department of Defense. It is responsible for providing contingency planning, operations, and security cooperation for Central and South America, the Caribbean (except U.S. commonwealths, territories, and possessions), their territorial waters, and for the force protection of U.S. military resources at these locations. On 6 June 1963, it was formally named as the United States Southern Command. 5th is The United States Space Command is a unified combatant command of the United States Department of Defense, responsible for military operations in outer space, specifically all operations 100 kilometers and greater above mean sea level. Headquartered at Offutt Air Force Base, Nebraska, USSTRATCOM is responsible for strategic nuclear deterrence, global strike, and operating the Defense Department's Global Information Grid. It was established in 1992. 9th is The United States Northern Command is responsible for defending the continental United States and Alaska, and for coordinating with the defenses of Canada, Mexico, and the Bahamas. It was established in 2002. 10th is The United States Africa Command is one of the eleven unified combatant commands of the United States Department of Defense, headquartered at Kelley Barracks, Stuttgart, Germany. It is responsible for U.S. military operations, including fighting regional conflicts and maintaining military relations with 53 African nations. The territory of the command consists of all of the African continent except for Egypt, which remains under the responsibility of Central Command, as it closely relates to the Middle East. It was established in 2007. 11th is The United States Cyber Command is one of the eleven unified combatant commands of the United States Department of Defense. It unifies the direction of cyberspace operations, strengthens Department of Defense cyberspace capabilities, and integrates and bolsters Department of Defense cyber expertise. It was established in 2010.
