Related links and videos: Standard Microdiscectomy:    • What is a Lumbar Microdiscectomy?   In this video I describe a variant to the lumbar microdiscectomy procedure to treat lumbar nerve compression or impingement or sciatica. The standard approach is described in the link above. There are variations in the direction and locations where discs herniate. Sometimes they can herniate laterally catching s nerve as it leaves the spine instead of inside the spinal canal. This requires a careful assessment and interpretation of the MRI scan in order to decide on the correct approach. Getting the approach right can effectively treat nerve pain in the buttock/ thigh or lower leg (sciatica), when other methods have failed.
