CONTENT WARNING: VIDEO CONTAINS IMAGES OF DEAD BODIES At the end of March, 2022 after a weeks-long occupation, Russian forces finally retreated from the towns of Irpin and Bucha on the north western edge of Kyiv, Ukraine. Journalists from AFP and other media moved in to investigate the situation just as a powerful allegation began to circulate online. Social media accounts, including the Russian Defence ministry's telegram, claimed Ukraine had staged the aftermath of a massacre in Bucha in a bid to make Russian troops look bad. As proof, they pointed to a video in which they claimed one of the bodies on the ground could be seen moving. Using image analysis, satellite images, and especially speaking to AFP reporter Danny Kemp on the ground with a photographer and video journalist, AFP's fact checker in Paris helped clarify the truth surrounding the viral video.
