London. C/U of an antique sewing machine operated by a foot pedal. Camera pans up to show a woman in old fashioned dress operating the sewing machine. Her hair is set in ringlets. (Norma Webb of Jones Ltd.) C/Us of parts of the machine which dates from 1859. C/U of feet operating the pedal. C/U of the woman as she sews. M/S of a "modern" woman with a more up to date machine. This is a portable electric model. C/U of the woman's foot as she operates the pedal. C/U of the woman - it is the model Patti Morgan - as she sews. She is making a "sun suit in record time." C/U of patterned stitches being sewn into the fabric. C/Us of hands and feet as she sews. C/U of fabric and pattern book. Narrator observes how home sewing is becoming more popular. "Modern equipment has assisted the "do it yourself" trend, becoming increasingly popular in this country from the point of view of economy as well as the personal satisfaction of having created something oneself." The traditional Pathe joke isn't long in coming: "In this way, women should be able to keep pace with changing fashion, but in practice, husbands will still have to fork out, when she says... "Darling, I've got absolutely nothing to wear!" C/Us of striped fabric being picked up and stitched. C/U of the very glamorous Patti obviously enjoying her sewing session. M/S of Patti admiring her own handiwork as she holds the sun suit up to the camera. It is rather fab. C/U of the top of the outfit, camera pans down as narrator says "skill had played little part in the operation, but it's not bad for a first attempt!" (I'd like to see him do it! All those stripes to match up...) Ends with a pan up showing the finished outfit and Patti posing in front of a mirror. Narrator says: "It looks good on too - although on Patti it could hardly look otherwise. Perhaps this is why they say a sewing machine is a girl's best friend!" Note: anomalies in paperwork - name of model may be Patty Morgan rather than Patti. This is part of a promotional show for Jones' Sewing Machine Co. at the Tea Centre in London.
