As a member of the Kalyan-family of ragas, it has very close resemblance to Kedar, Kamod, Hameer and Gaud Sarang. Therefore, the slightest deviation from its prescribed set of rules takes it down a wrong path that may lead to one or all of these ragas. Joydeep Ghosh gives a deft performance of this raga, performing a brilliant alap, jod and gat in madhyalay Teental. Only a handful of exponents of the sursingar are left today of which, Ghosh is a leading name. His techniques and raagdaari (handling of the ragas) are based strongly on the foundation of the Senia Shahjahanpur gharana. He has imbibed raga elaboration and blending laykari with gayaki ang and tantrakari from the Imdadkhani gharana.
