There is a clamour for probe into the 1984 anti-Sikh riots. Revelations by Congress VP Rahul Gandhi provides fresh salvo for BJP to attack Congress. Congress is also completely cornered by Akali Dal. Akalis demand thorough probe into the riots but Congress rejected the call. In the interview to TIMES NOW's Editor-in-Chief Arnab Goswami, Congress VP Gandhi Rahul Gandhi had insisted that the Congress govt in 1984 "was not aiding and abetting the riots" but had tried to stop the violence. He also said that that some Congressmen were probably involved in the riots. Congress leaders Jagdish Tytler and Sajjan Kumar are facing allegations of involvement in the riots. Scores of Sikh protesters held a protest outside Rahul Gandhi's residence, demanding revelation of names of Congressmen who were allegedly involved in the 1984 anti-Sikh riots. The protesters demanded justice for thousands who were killed in anti-Sikh riots in Oct 1984 following the assassination of then PM Indira Gandhi by her Sikh bodyguards. Several protesters also accused Gandhi of "rubbing salt on wounds of victims of 1984 riots." The 1984 anti-Sikh riots was the result of a "big conspiracy" which had been "organised by the then Central government and the Congress", Punjab CM Parkash Singh Badal said even as he hit out at the Congress over its claims on the Operation Bluestar issue. Then PM Indira Gandhi launched Operation Bluestar to flush out Khalistani militants from the Golden temple in Amritsar. British foreign secretary William Hague had said in a statement before the House of Commons that the UK's role in Operation Blue Star in June 1984 was limited to military advice as sought by the Indian govt in Feb of that year on Indian contingency plans for an operation against militants who were occupying the Sri Harmandir Sahib. British PM David Cameron has asserted that there was "absolutely no" involvement of the Margaret Thatcher Government in the 1984 Operation Bluestar by the Indian army to flush out militants from the Golden Temple. Cameron ordered the probe after documents released under a 30-year declassification rule stated an officer of the elite Special Air Service travelled to Delhi and advised the Indian government as it framed plans for removing the militants in February 1984. Sikh groups in the UK criticised the scope of the inquiry into Britain's alleged role in Operation Bluestar. It is unclear whether the plan referred to in the documents was used by the Indian government. A few months after Operation Bluestar, then Indian PM Indira Gandhi was assassinated by her Sikh bodyguards in an apparent revenge attack. Rejecting reports of involvement of the Margaret Thatcher government in the Operation Bluestar to flush out militants, External Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid today said there are no records indicating this and the entire operation was carried out by the Indian Army. Political analysts feel the issue will have a national impact. Download the Times Now India's Election HQ app and get all the election info at one go.
