(4K) Summiting the highest mountain in Onís, Picos de Europa

In today’s trail we visit Picos de Europa Natural Park. This time we will climb a peak locally known as “La Verdilluenga”. With an altitude of 2130 m. this mountain is considered as the highest mountain in de Asturian municipality of Onís. We will summit this mountain through a trail which starts in the Ercina Lake, locates in the area known as Lagos de Covadonga (Covadonga Lakes). The hike has a circular part from which we will deviate to climb La Verdilluenga. The total distance it covers is 18.5 km and has an elevation gain of around 1200 m. This route was a little bit of a struggle for me. I was in very good shape when I hiked it, but at points it was a struggle to continue it. Fortunately, I managed to push through and end it. I mention this as to let people know of the need of a good level of fitness to visit the summit of Verdilluenga. At the same time and as I mention in the video, it is important to consider that in some areas of this trail it is very easy to get lost. This is because the landscape at this points is very similar no matter what direction you are looking at and hence it is difficult to ensure you are heading towards the right place. Goes without saying, I would strongly encourage you to hike this trail only if you have experience and are in good shape. Other than this, I found the trail incredibly beautiful, almost breathtaking. I was very surprised by the views from the top of the Verdilluenga peak but also the final few kilometers of the hike. At some point I looked back almost by accident and found myself looking at an image of the Central Massif of Picos de Europa and regretting not having enough time to sit down for a while and absorb the landscape.
