Artist Ignacio Perez Meruane guided a walkthrough of Sandra Vásquez de la Horra’s The Awake Volcanoes with reflections on the work and their shared explorations of geological, socio-political, and personal histories. This event was held at ICA LA on Wednesday, November 5, 2025. Ignacio Perez Meruane (Caracas, Venezuela 1983) is a Chilean artist who lives and works in Los Angeles. His work is focused on the ways in which capitalism and globalization intersect with and impress upon culture, people, and our environment. Through sculptural processes and material explorations, his work gives form to research and direct observation into overlapping geological, geographic and political histories. His work has been exhibited in Santiago, Chile, New York, and venues across Los Angeles such as Human Resources, South Willard, Commonwealth & Council, Craft Contemporary, Los Angeles Contemporary Archive and Clockshop, where he currently serves on the Board of Directors. Perez Meruane received a B.F.A. in General Sculptural Studies from the Maryland Institute College of Art, and an M.F.A. from the California Institute of the Arts. Sandra Vásquez de la Horra: The Awake Volcanoes is organized by the Denver Art Museum and curated by Raphael Fonseca, Curator of Modern and Contemporary Latin American Art. The presentation at ICA LA is curated by Amanda Sroka, Senior Curator, with Emilia Shaffer-Del Valle, Curatorial Associate, and additional support provided by Amelie Wu, Getty Marrow Curatorial Intern. Funding for Sandra Vásquez de la Horra: The Awake Volcanoes is provided by Tim Disney, Betsy Greenberg & Steve NyBlom, and Karen Hillenburg. ICA LA is supported by the Curator’s Council and Fieldwork Council.
