Did you know that your marital status can affect your taxes and the amount of benefit and credit payments you are eligible to get? It is important to tell the Canada Revenue Agency about any changes in your marital status. We are here and I’m here to guide you to choose the best option of marital status that suits you. When you are filing your return, your marital status depends on your status as it is on December 31st of the tax year. You have 6 options to choose from. If you are married, this means you have a spouse and only applies to you if you are legally married. If you are not legally married and you have a common-law partner, whom you lived and had a conjugal relationship with for at least 12 continuous months, or you’re the parent of your child by birth or adoption, then best option would be to choose common-law. If you were once married or living common-law, your spouse or partner passed away and you have not entered into another relationship by December 31st, then you would select widowed as your marital status. If you were legally divorced in the previous year, you should be selecting divorced under marital status. If you were separated in your relationship while married, your status will be changed to Separated. However, if you were living common-law, you have to wait a minimum of 90 days from the date of your separation, in order for you to select this option. For an example: If you had a common-law partner and decided to live separate on November 01st, you would still have to select as common-law. And lastly, if you didn't meet any of the criteria of the other statuses, then you should select Single when filing your return. ****** If you liked this video, please hit 𝐥𝐢𝐤𝐞, click 𝐬𝐮𝐬𝐜𝐫𝐢𝐛𝐞, & feel free to 𝐬𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐞!
