Sunburn not only causes immediate pain and discomfort but can also have long-term consequences, including an increased risk of skin cancer and premature aging The first line of defense against sunburn is protective clothing, sunscreen is the next line of defense When selecting sunscreen for your child, opt for a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher. Look for child-friendly formulations and ingredients that are gentle on their delicate skin. These are mineral based sunscreen The best choices for kids are what’s called INORGANIC ingredients Zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, avoiding ORGANIC constituents called oxybenzone, avobenzone Some popular and highly recommended sunscreen brands for children include Neutrogena Pure & Free Baby Sunscreen, Aveeno Baby Continuous Protection Zinc Oxide Sunscreen, and Thinkbaby Safe Sunscreen. American Academy of Pediatrics recommends avoiding use of sunscreen in infants younger than 6 months, but if they are going to be in the sun and can’t avoid it, it can be applied sparingly to small areas: face and back of hands. Remember infants have an immature skin barrier and can be more sensitive to allergies in lotions and sunscreens. "The Teaspoon rule” 1 teaspoon face and neck, 2 teaspoons back and abdomen, 1 teaspoon for each arm and 2 teaspoons for each leg. Total: 9 teaspoons per application! Timing: recommended apply 15-30 minutes before acitivity in the sun to allow to absorption Reapplicaiton after swimming and every 2 hours if not in the water Beyond sunscreen, dressing your child appropriately is key. Opt for lightweight, long-sleeved shirts and pants made from tightly woven fabrics. Don't forget a wide-brimmed hat to protect their face, neck, and ears. And sunglasses with UV protection help shield their eyes from harmful rays Other measures you can take to protect your child from the sun. Seek shade during peak sun hours, typically between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Use umbrellas, canopies, or sun shades when spending time outdoors. These provide extra protection against harmful UV rays. Teaching children about sun safety is crucial. Find engaging ways to educate them about the importance of sun protection, such as through games, activities, or songs.
