Full no-death run through both Normal and Special (Hard) mode for GG Aleste (GGアレスタ), made by Compile for the Sega Game Gear! This was played with the real cart on a real Game Gear. The video was captured from the handheld using the GG TV board (http://etim.net.au/ggtv/ggtv.htm), which provides video output. Note: These were not played back to back, I actually beat the special mode first then went back and played normal, which is much easier. I just wanted to combine them into a single video for ease of viewing. Now obviously things need to be scaled back to run on handheld hardware back in the 90s, so this game doesn't quite live up to the other 8 bit entries on the Master System but it is still a solid game. GG Aleste has fairly basic graphics and sound effects but they serve their purpose. The music is where this game really shines, it's actually very, very good, and easily on par or better than other games in the series. Since I played this on a modded Game Gear with video out, I was able to play this on my TV instead of the tiny/blurry Game Gear screen. For most players that is probably not a realistic way of playing it since both the original game and a modded Game Gear are quite expensive. Thankfully in the near future this game will be included with the Aleste collection for PS4 and Switch so players can enjoy it on modern systems. The familiar Compile formula has been replicated again with the player picking up power chips for the main wain and items that are delivered at certain intervals for the special weapons. The special weapons are (making up my own names since I have no idea what they actually stand for): S (Shotgun), W (Wave), N (Napalm), L (Laser), H (Homing), and D (Defensive). Most of the special weapons are pretty good (except S, which I find to be worthless all around), D is by far the best weapon. The reason being is that it provides a semi-defensive barrier around your ship and added firepower, both of which can cancel bullets! In addition, it also slows down the game quite a bit when you use it, which definitely helps when playing Special mode (more on that later). There are a total of 8 levels, or rounds as they are called, in addition to 2 bonus levels that appear in round 4 and 6 where you can rack up extra points (and extends). The difficulty is fairly easy on normal mode, as you can basically play with H or W and annihilate everything on the screen without much resistance. The game really only picks up once you play the Special mode, which introduces revenge bullets aimed at the player whenever you kill an enemy. This does make the game a bit harder but I only really found it challenging when going for a no-death playthrough, which did admittedly take far more tries that I would have liked.
